Is True Bamboo toxic to dogs and cats?
What we know about True Bamboo
Not verified: no known toxicity reported, but no vet or poison-control source confirms it. Ask your vet if your pet eats it. Vet and university sources (ASPCA, NC State) cover golden bamboo (Phyllostachys aurea), a different genus, not this species (Bambusa vulgaris). Do not confuse it with heavenly bamboo (Nandina domestica), an unrelated shrub that IS toxic.
Bambusa vulgaris
Also called: Golden Bamboo and Fishpole Bamboo.
What to do if your pet chewed it
- Move the plant out of reach so they cannot take another bite.
- If your pet is alert, gently rinse their mouth and offer a little water.
- Call your vet or ASPCA Animal Poison Control at 888-426-4435, especially if you see drooling, vomiting, swelling, or lethargy.
