Propagating snake plant safely with pets at home
Can I propagate snake plant if I have cats or dogs?
Snake plant is toxic to dogs and cats, per the ASPCA (listed there as Sansevieria trifasciata). Yes, if cuttings and divisions stay out of reach. Leaf pieces, sap and roots are as toxic as the parent plant.
- Treat every leaf piece and division as toxic; NC State lists the leaves, roots and sap, and says the sap can irritate skin.
- Dry and root cuttings in a closed room or on a high shelf, and keep the pots, mix and rooting hormone out of pets' reach too.
- Wear gloves if the sap irritates your skin.
Divide pups or root leaf sections
- Division is easiest. Lift the plant out, separate the offsets (pups) with their roots, and repot each one right away in fresh, well-draining mix.
- For leaf cuttings, cut a healthy leaf into 2 inch sections. Cut the bottom of each on a slant and the top straight, so you know which end is up.
- Let the cut ends dry and callus for several days. Illinois Extension gives 4 to 7 days for succulent cuttings.
- Stand each piece upright, bottom end down, in a gritty mix of equal parts potting mix and perlite. Keep it barely moist; a piece planted upside down will not root.
- Missouri Extension notes leaf sections must sit in the same position they grew; offsets, by contrast, usually already carry a few roots, which is why division is the faster route.
Why is my snake plant cutting rotting in water?
Succulent cuttings rot if kept too moist, and a leaf piece sitting in water is the wettest way to root one. Lift it out, trim off the mushy end back to firm green tissue, let it dry for several days, then root it upright in gritty, barely moist mix.
